This fully working concept was designed and developed in 8 hours during the ING internal hackathon.
The project aimed to improve payment accessibility for visually impaired customers in physical retail stores. Before introducing this feature, there wasn’t any way for individuals with this disability to verify the amount entered on the POS before completing the transaction, forcing them to rely on the cashier’s accuracy. The need for a more independent and secure solution became clear, leading to the development of a new payment feature.
The process
01. FRAMING THE SOLUTION
To address this challenge, we conceptualized the “Double-Tap” feature for the ING Pay app, focusing on user autonomy and accessibility. This solution enables users to navigate the payment process in two distinct stages. The first tap collects transaction details, which are made accessible through assistive technologies such as screen readers, magnification tools, and high-contrast modes. This allows users to independently review the payment information. Only after the user confirms the amount is the second tap used to finalize the transaction. This approach significantly reduces the risk of errors and ensures a more inclusive payment experience for visually impaired customers.
02. COORDINATING THE IMPLEMENTATION
The implementation demanded close collaboration across multiple teams, including UI/UX designers, developers, and accessibility specialists.
